Pecos Indian Reburial
Pete Toya, war chief of the Jemez Pueblo Indians, presided over the reburial of the remains of 2,076 individuals at Pecos National Historical Park in May of 1999. The remains, pottery, and other items dating from as early as A.D.1275 were taken in the early 20th century to the Peabody Museums in Cambridge and Andover, Massachusetts. It is the largest repatriation of Native American remains to date.
