A glowering sky broods over the market at Gizo as do clouds of ethnic strife that broke out in late 1988 and continue to plague the islands specially Guadalcanal and Malaita. The Islands served as giant aircraft carriers, and the sooth seas wer like a conveyor belt for Japanese troops and supplies heading southeast to try to create a South Pacific "Maginot line" .
