At the University of Rochester Medical Center’s Strong Memorial Hospital leeches are used on the fingers of Brandon Young. Brandon cut three fingers off in an industrial accident, but were reattached by Dr. Stephen Vega, a plastic surgeon. The leeches are used because they remove clotting blood, and the secrete an enzyme that promotes healing.
